Award-winning and state-of-the-art: the new home of Macquarie’s Law School
Project Overview
The Michael Kirby Building gives Macquarie University’s law and philosophy students and staff a new home for legal education, opening in 2024 on the Ryde campus in Sydney. Named after Australian jurist and the university’s first Emeritus Chancellor, the state-of-the-art facility embodies a bold vision for how students learn, combining exemplar mass timber engineering with adaptive re-use to create a building that’s both beautiful and efficient for the people who use it every day.
Scope of Work
TTW delivered integrated building engineering services for the project including:
- Design input for feasibility studies into use, cost and programme, comparing complete demolition and rebuild against partial retention and addition
- Full design and detailing of the mass timber structure, using lightweight, quick-to-construct timber pivotal to the project’s success
- Specialist timber engineering to ensure the building’s showpiece structure was efficient, quick to install, and met the architects’ and client’s vision for a beautiful mass timber experience for occupants
