A modern renewal bringing six pools and full wellness facilities to Northcote
Project Overview
The Northcote Aquatic and Recreation Centre gives the local community a modern, all-in-one destination for health and wellbeing, bringing together an upgraded outdoor 50m pool, indoor lane pool, warm-water pool, leisure pool, splash pad and learn-to-swim pool, alongside fitness and wellness spaces for group fitness, yoga and allied health.
In response to the City of Darebin’s 2017–2022 Climate Emergency Plan, the centre was designed to achieve a 6-Star Green Star rating, an ambitious target for an energy-intensive facility, giving the community a place to stay active and connected that’s also better for the environment they live in.
Scope of Work
TTW delivered Structural and Civil Engineering services for the centre, including:
- Innovative structural and civil design, material selection and detailed engineering to protect the building’s thermal envelope and reduce energy use
- Extensive use of timber in the main pool hall, with large double Glulam beams framing the roof and Dowel Laminated Timber (DLT) ceilings combining structural, acoustic and thermal performance
- Civil design following best-practice stormwater management principles
- Material and system selection to minimise the carbon footprint during construction and operation, while creating a low-maintenance, welcoming environment
