A new passenger lift, engineered into one of Australia’s most significant heritage sites
Project Overview
Hyde Park Barracks gives every visitor access to one of Australia’s most significant convict-era buildings, a UNESCO World Heritage-listed site in Sydney.
As part of an $18 million revamp, a new passenger lift enclosure now connects all three levels of the museum, previously accessible by stairs only, opening up the site’s history to visitors of all abilities, while preserving the heritage integrity that makes the building so significant.
Scope of Work
TTW delivered Heritage and Structural Engineering services for the revamp, including:
- Engineering the installation of a new glazed lift structure, providing equal access to all three levels of the museum
- Design of an innovative freestanding lift shaft with no structural connection to existing floors or walls
