A heritage landmark on Martin Place, refurbished to modern standards
Project Overview
Forty-Four Martin Place gives Sydney’s CBD a piece of its heritage reborn, one of the most significant heritage assets on one of the city’s most prominent corners, refurbished to pay homage to its original 1936 design while meeting the standards of a modern, prestigious office building. The result honours the building’s grace and dignity while giving it new life for the people who work there now.
Scope of Work
TTW delivered Heritage and Structural Engineering services for the refurbishment, including:
- Addition of new storeys above the existing 11-storey structure, with an atrium installed through the middle of the building and the lift core extended
- Design of a new skylight to bring natural light down through the building to the ground floor, while creating additional office space
- Multiple tests and advanced analysis techniques to examine the strength of the 85-year-old structure, enabling major modifications while minimising costly strengthening works
- Re-use of the existing structure, working within the constraints of the heritage building to fully realise the architectural intent
